Refundable, partially refundable and non-refundable rates
Every room rate has a cancellation policy set by the hotel. It decides how much of your payment comes back if you cancel. There are three kinds.
The three kinds of rate
- Fully refundable. You can cancel for a full refund until a deadline. The room option shows it as "Fully refundable before" a date and time. After that deadline, a fee or the full price may apply.
- Partially refundable. If you cancel, you get part of the price back. The room option shows "Partially refundable" with the percentage you get back and the date it applies until. After the last date, you get nothing back.
- Non-refundable, non-changeable. You can't cancel this rate for a refund. You also can't change the dates, room or guests after booking. If you don't arrive, the hotel treats it as a no-show and keeps the full payment.
A non-refundable rate is often the cheapest option for a room. Check which option is selected before you book.
Deadlines use the hotel's local time
All cancellation dates and times are in the hotel's local time, not your own time zone. If you are in a different time zone, work out the deadline in your own time before you rely on it.
Where you see the policy before you pay
- On the hotel page. Each room lists its cancellation options. Point to the small icon next to a refundable option to see the full schedule of deadlines and refund amounts.
- At checkout. The Cancellation policy box lists each deadline and the refund amount. A non-refundable rate shows "Non-refundable, non-changeable rate" instead.
- In the booking agreement. The agreement you accept at checkout repeats the cancellation terms.
Say you chose a free cancellation room earlier and now book a non-refundable one. Checkout then asks you to tick a box to confirm you understand.
Where you see it after you book
- Your confirmation email has a cancellation policy line, such as "Refundable before" a date in hotel local time, or "Non-refundable, non-changeable".
- My Trips. Open the trip to see the policy that still applies, including any deadline that hasn't passed. See My Trips.
